Bauer Media’s movie magazine, Empire, is to publish the ‘World Exclusive’ first shoot and interviews with Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Al Pacino for this year’s most anticipated film, The Irishman.

As one of the biggest world exclusives Empire has ever run, The Irishman will feature on the cover of the October issue, on sale on Thursday 5 September 2019, and is the only magazine world-wide to feature definitive interviews with the legendary film maker and cast.

The eagerly awaited film directed by Martin Scorsese, reuniting him with De Niro, will premiere on Netflix and in select cinemas this autumn. The Irishman will also be the closing night Gala film at BFI London Film Festival on 13 October.

Commenting on the issue, editor-in-chief, Terri White said: “This world exclusive has been seventeen months in the making – after locking the deal, there were multiple trips to New York for the cover shoot by the phenomenal Brigitte Lacombe and interviews with Martin Scorsese and his actors. It’s testament to Empire’s reputation and standing as the biggest film magazine in the world and we’re stoked to be able to treat our readers to something they cannot get in any other magazine anywhere in the world. The power of Empire and the power of print!”

Inside the magazine, The Irishman has received the full ‘Empire treatment’ with a 12-page special devoted to telling the full story of bringing the ultimate crime epic to the screen. Empire’s Nick de Senmlyen’s interviews – the only ones to be given with Hollywood’s heavyweights Scorsese, De Niro, Pesci, and Pacino - feature alongside exclusive portraits taken in New York by world-renowned photographer Brigitte Lacombe and never-been-seen-stills from the film.

Empire reveals the film’s full dramatic trek to screen that took more than a decade and overcame many obstacles - from creating the right movie for Hollywood’s greatest to all come on board to the amount of money it would cost. But, the major hurdle was how to film the leading actors whose characters age decades, in a script that goes back and forth over a period of 50 years. The result would be a technological revolution that Scorsese is leading, with ground-breaking “youthification” as he terms it, created by cutting-edge digital camera trickery used to de-age the actors. The magazine also includes in-depth interviews with Robert De Niro who opens up on being Scorsese’s main man for almost half a century and Al Pacino reflects on his lustrous career.

Empire’s ‘World Exclusive’ for The Irishman and interview with Martin Scorsese is another first for the magazine, which has been celebrating its 30th birthday since January, with the 30 Most Adventurous Filmmakers Of Our Lifetime comprised of men and women who have taken risks, made incredible cinema and been vital in evolving the medium of film. The magazine has already celebrated legendary filmakers James Cameron, Edgar Wright, Jordan Peele, Quentin Tarantino, Taika Waititi, Danny Boyle, Christopher McQuarrie and Peter Jackson with more greats set to feature each month until the end of the birthday year.
