Hearst Launches Paid Talent Scholarship in Partnership With Spareroom, Including Free London Accommodation

Hearst UK has announced the launch of a talent scholarship sponsored by flatshare site SpareRoom.

The initiative will offer successful applicants the chance to work within one of Hearst UK’s editorial teams for two weeks, being paid the London Living Wage, with travel expenses covered, as well as free shared accommodation in a zone 1-3 London property with the other winners.

The Hearst Talent Scholarship is open for anyone to apply, with entrants being asked to tell a story that has never been told before in no more than 500 words. Winners will be selected by leading Hearst UK editors, who will look for originality of voice, tone and subject matter. The scholarships are set to take place in February 2021, Covid-19 permitting.

Dionne Maxwell, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging Lead, Hearst UK, said: “At Hearst UK, we’re on a journey to create an environment where everyone feels like they truly belong. We believe that everyone, no matter what their background, deserves a chance to pursue their dream career. We hope that the Hearst Talent Scholarship, sponsored by SpareRoom, will not only open the door to people who may not otherwise have that opportunity, but also arm them with the tools and support to truly flourish.”

James Wildman CEO, Hearst UK | President, Hearst Europe, added: “I’m extremely proud to launch the Hearst Talent Scholarship. Talent is the life blood of our company, and we believe a diversity of voices and ideas will make Hearst UK, and the products we create, as unique as we are. We’re delighted to partner with SpareRoom to provide successful applicants with the opportunity to live rent free whilst they gain invaluable experience working on some of our trusted brands.”

Matt Hutchinson, Communications Director, SpareRoom, said: “At SpareRoom we’re passionate about the idea that everyone should have the chance to live a fulfilled and productive life. But all too often, affordability means people miss out on career opportunities, especially if it means affording to live in an expensive city like London. We’re delighted to be able to play a part in this great initiative and hopefully help a few people take an opportunity they’d otherwise miss out on.”
