Diversity & Inclusion

PPA ED&I Statement of Intent

At the PPA, we are committed to fostering an environment that promotes equality, diversity, and inclusion (ED&I). We believe that everyone has the right to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, or disability.

We recognise the importance of diversity in all its forms and the positive impact it can have on our organisation and the wider media industry. We are committed to building a culture where everyone feels valued, included, and able to thrive.

To achieve this, we will:
  1. Ensure that equality, diversity, and inclusion are at the heart of our decision-making processes and are reflected in our policies and practices.
  2. Foster a culture of respect and inclusivity where all employees, members, partners, and stakeholders feel supported and valued.
  3. Provide training and development opportunities to enable all individuals to reach their full potential.
  4. Challenge discrimination, harassment, and prejudice in all its forms, and work to eradicate it from our organisation and the wider industry.
  5. Monitor and regularly review our progress on equality, diversity, and inclusion, and be transparent about our successes and areas for improvement.

The role of the PPA

We recognise that achieving equality, diversity, and inclusion is an ongoing process, and we are committed to taking action to make a positive difference. We believe that by embracing diversity and inclusivity, we can create a stronger and more successful organisation that better serves our members and the media industry as a whole.

We have defined our role as being to:
  1. Take accountability. By this we will:
  • Recognise the industry’s historical failings in supporting diversity.
  • Hold a mirror up to the good, the bad, and the ugly, using personal stories to bring this alive.
  • Represent the best of the industry, and…
  • Represent what the industry can be by changing representation in the industry.

  1. Raise awareness. By this we will:
  • Be the standard bearer of good ED&I, signalling best practice and providing guidance.
  • Facilitate discussion at industry level.
  • Communicate and champion the value of ED&I in the industry.
  • Provide opportunities for mentoring.
  • Actively seek feedback and input from diverse and underrepresented groups.

  1. Support best practice. By this we will:
  • Give members the advice, support, and tools needed to advance ED&I in their businesses, and…
  • Provide targeted support to our smaller members that need help with this.
  • As a trusted source of information, offer resources and materials that align with our values.
  • Define a tone, language, and feel that represents our industry, our members, our values, and the progress we want to make happen.

  1. Examine and monitor progress. By this we will:
  • Support members to collect and review their data.
  • Define an industry benchmark of what good ED&I performance looks like.
  • Measure ED&I progress in the industry and from this identify actions needed to attain excellence.

Our guiding principles

For all our work in 2023 and beyond, the following principles must be met:

  • Is what we’re doing effecting real change?
  • Does this move beyond awareness/talk and into actions?
  • Can we measure the impact?
  • Are we centring / is the focus here on marginalised communities?
