PPA Next Gen Board: applications now open

Bringing together emerging leaders from across member businesses.

The PPA Next Gen Board advise on the future of the sector, whilst building their leadership skills, and forming lasting connections with peers and senior industry decision-makers.

We are now recruiting 15 new members for the 2027-28 board, chaired by Managing Director of The Stylist Group, Lisa Smosarski.

PPA Next Gen Board members will be in post for 24 months – see who’s on the current board here.

“Joining the Next Gen Board is an incredible way to expand your peer network, raise your profile and, perhaps most importantly, influence the future of the industry that you’re building your career in. Being part of boards like this transformed my career, and I am proud now to offer that same opportunity to other people who are as passionate about this industry as I am.”

Lisa Smosarski, Managing Director, The Stylist Group

Next Gen Board members will:
  • Take part in six board meetings a year and help shape the PPA’s thinking on the issues that matter most, such as AI, talent, sustainability, and changing audiences.

  • Share their perspective directly with the PPA’s senior team and Board.

  • Build their network across publishers, disciplines, and B2B and consumer businesses.

  • Gain board experience and develop their leadership skills.

  • Get involved, where you want to, in PPA steering groups, events, and panels.

What previous boards have achieved

Since 2023, Next Gen Board members have turned their own ideas into practical initiatives that widen access to publishing, improve recruitment and strengthen links between the industry and those just starting out. Their work shows what happens when the next generation has a meaningful seat at the table – lasting benefits for them and for the wider sector.

The 2024–25 cohort delivered the PPA Good Hiring Code and supporting guide, setting practical standards for fair and inclusive recruitment. They also developed Find Yourself in Publishing, including career stories, role guidance, and a spotlight on industry opportunities.

The 2025–26 cohort developed and launched the PPA Paid Work Experience Programme, creating employer and candidate guides, building a pipeline of pre-screened applicants and securing publisher participation. They also attended careers fairs, built relationships with university and industry partners, and were invited to take part in panels and university accreditation visits. Within a week of launch, the programme reached its initial target of 100 paid placement days, with five publishers adopting the framework by autumn 2026.

“Being part of the PPA Next Gen Board is truly a fantastic opportunity. During my time on the board, I’ve had the joy of meeting people across the industry who I might not otherwise have met, building my network and developing my confidence and skills. You really do get out what you put in, and while it is a commitment, it’s also an honour. If you’re willing to get involved, share ideas, ask questions and make the most of the opportunities, you’ll get so much back from the experience. Most importantly, it’s a great way to meet some brilliant peers, learn more about yourself and the wider industry, and feel like you’re part of something bigger.”
