The PPA welcomes the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) assurances that ‘news media’ will not be included in new age appropriate design rules.
The publication of the 'Age appropriate design: a code of practice for online services' and the accompanying FAQ's by the ICO, recognised the "vital role the news media industry plays in our society."
PPA raised concerns with the ICO on behalf of publishers last year, as part of our submission responding to the ICO's call for evidence. PPA raised concerns that the draft Code could have "negative repercussions for the existing media landscape, with the capacity to encompass a greater breadth of media players than intended."
Concerns raised included the potential content restrictions as a result of ensuring compliance with the Code and limitations to business development.
The PPA welcomes the ICO assurances in publishing the revised Code, confirming that news media will not be included if publishers adhere to the Editors Code and advertising regulations in the CAP Code. This will negate the need for publishers to take additional steps in relation to published content for children.
Elizabeth Denham, Information Commissioner, said: "In an age when children learn how to use an iPad before they ride a bike, it is right that organisations designing and developing online services do so with the best interest of children in mind. Children's privacy must not be traded in the chase for profit."
