MagCulture Live Returns

The latest New York edition of magCulture Live is happening on the 9th June, featuring the best of New York magazine publishing to share with the world. Speakers come from both long-established and recently launched publications, demonstrating the ongoing cultural role of magazines in the city as well as New York’s leading contribution to contemporary magazine-making. Talks will cover process and theory, creativity and business, and are aimed at people in the magazine industry, people who wish to be a part of that industry, and people wondering what the deal is with magazines today.

Speakers:

  • Françoise Mouly, Art Editor, The New Yorker
  • Kim Hastreiter, Editor, The New Now
  • Lavaille Lavette, President and Publisher, Ebony
  • Lucas Mascatello, Editor, Civilization
  • Caitlin Thompson, Publisher and co-founder, Racquet

We’ll be asking:

How do you commission illustrations that reflect the mood of a city?

What does a contemporary City magazine look like?

How does a magazine both influence and record Black culture?

How do you keep a weekly news magazine relevant?

When can images communicate complex stories and emotions better than words?

Why launch a magazine that ignores the internet?

How do you reinvent the sports magazine?

As well as the live speaker line-up, we’ve invited a number of special guests to contribute
thoughts on their favourite New York magazines to further broaden the scope of the event.
