As one of the biggest world exclusives Empire has ever run, The Irishman will feature on the cover of the October issue, on sale on Thursday 5 September 2019, and is the only magazine world-wide to feature definitive interviews with the legendary film maker and cast.

The eagerly awaited film directed by Martin Scorsese, reuniting him with De Niro, will premiere on Netflix and in select cinemas this autumn.  The Irishman will also be the closing night Gala film at BFI London Film Festival on 13 October.

Inside the magazine, The Irishman has received the full ‘Empire treatment’ with a 12-page special devoted to telling the full story of bringing the ultimate crime epic to the screen.   Empire’s Nick de Senmlyen’s interviews – the only ones to be given with Hollywood’s heavyweights Scorsese, De Niro, Pesci, and Pacino – feature alongside exclusive portraits taken in New York by world-renowned photographer Brigitte Lacombe and never-been-seen-stills from the film. 

Empire reveals the film’s full dramatic trek to screen that took more than a decade and overcame many obstacles – from creating the right movie for Hollywood’s greatest to all come on board to the amount of money it would cost.  But, the major hurdle was how to film the leading actors whose characters age decades, in a script that goes back and forth over a period of 50 years.  The result would be a technological revolution that Scorsese is leading, with ground-breaking “youthification” as he terms it, created by cutting-edge digital camera trickery used to de-age the actors.  The magazine also includes in-depth interviews with Robert De Niro who opens up on being Scorsese’s main man for almost half a century and Al Pacino reflects on his lustrous career.
