Michael shared insights on the growing battle for publisher legal teams in trying to combat this threat to journalism, including some notable successes for The Wall Street Journal and Barron’s, as well as some disappointing setbacks.

Sophie explained how The Independent and The Standard were seeing a significant threat to their legitimate licensing business through systematic copyright theft – valuable editorial was published on multiple unauthorised websites and apps. This also impacted the commercial business with unauthorised advertising being served against infringed articles causing damage to their revenue and reputation. Using NLA’s Text Tracker service, they saw 37 illegal sites closed down and 10,000 of their articles successfully removed in 2023.
