Harper's Bazaar UK Unveils Rainbow Holographic Cover for its July Issue

Harper’s Bazaar has revealed a limited-edition July cover in support of the NHS. Copies of the special issue will be distributed for free at major hospitals across the UK as part of Hearst’s involvement in Project Wingman, an initiative that helps frontline NHS staff deal with the stresses of the coronavirus through the creation of ‘wellness lounges’.

The bespoke edition will feature a rainbow holographic cover that includes a hidden message of encouragement. When the cover is tilted, the inspiring phrase ‘Be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud’, a quote from the American poet and civil-rights activist Maya Angelou, is revealed across the spectrum.

The lenticular cover has been created to accompany a 22-page portfolio inside the July issue that celebrates the power of creativity to see us through times of adversity. The feature includes contributions from high-profile artists and designers including Marina Abramovic, Giorgio Armani, Maria Grazia Chiuri, Dolce & Gabbana, Antony Gormley, Lubaina Himid, Alessandro Michele and Donatella Versace.

The design for the July 2020 limited-edition cover is reminiscent of Richard Avedon’s famous ‘lenticular eye’ cover for the magazine’s 1965 issue.

Lydia Slater, Acting Editor-in-Chief at Harper’s Bazaar said: “We have been so happy to support the fantastic Project Wingman initiative over the past few months and we wanted to create something unique for the NHS frontline staff who use the lounges. Our rainbow hologram cover shows our admiration and gratitude for their heroic efforts, in a way that also speaks to Bazaar’s artistic and literary legacy.”

Project Wingman currently has 60 lounges open, run by over 4,000 volunteers. Hearst UK has been providing free magazines from across its portfolio, including Harper’s Bazaar, ELLE and Good Housekeeping, with Bazaar also supplying the wellness lounges with beauty boxes containing indulgent face and body treatments.
